I think it's becasue not many Americans know alot about Africa. For instance, if someone asked me to name 10 countries in Africa, I don't know if I would be able to. But, if someone asked me to name 10 countries in Europe, Asia and the other continents, I would be able to.

well when we say we've been to africa, it says a lot more than "i've been to ethiopia". people will be like where is ethiopia? and also, since not a lot of people (well a lot of ppl do, but not as many as other countries) go to africa, it's just like, "oh cool you've been to africa." hopefully you kind of get the picture...

I have actually been to ethiopia with my dad to get my two sisters that our family was adopting. it was such a cool experience.

Most people don't know the difference between "country" and "continent". It's the same thing, though is you say you've been to Europe or Asia instead of France or Japan. Most foreigners say they've been to America instead of United States or even Kansas or Ohio.

I've never been to Africa. I've also never been to Asia or Europe or Antarctica. If I generalize, I cover a larger area, but I am quite aware these are continents.

Although, Americans, in general, are very Ethnocentric, as a country. We pride ourselves on our willingness to accept immigrants but then we spend very little time studying the recent history and cultures of other countries.

Especially the red states. ::grin::

Do all Americans think that???

I've been to Europe.... do I have to list all of the countries I visited to prove that I understand the difference between a continent and a country?

I've also been Africa and visited several countries while I was there.....

Why is this an issue?

Because most Americans dont know more than 5 countries in Africa, so they just throw it all together to they don't look stupid.
