With modern transportation and communication systems, there are a lot of instances where you need to know what time it is in a specific location.

Before standard times, most localities essentially would use time based on their location, so noon in one location would be different than noon 50 miles away. With the standard time zone map, if I need to plan to get a package somewhere at Noon local time, I will know exactly what time that is relative to wherever I am - and relative to the time wherever any intermediate stops are made.

Standard time zones were first implemented for railroads - but were also necessary once telegraphs and telephones came into use.
