Even you can configure your Outlook Express (or equivalent) to send out an e-mail with a random e-mail address. This happens because not all SMTP servers (server incharge of outgoing mail) verify the existence of the e-mail address, and some simply allow you to send out mails with an e-mail address from another server. Like sending out an email with aol.com extention while using smtp.gmail.com outgoing server. Since gmail cannot verify whether this AOL address really exists or not, it simply sends the mail. And when someone tries to repond to that mail, it bounces back saying that the address does not exist.
Hope this helps.

I don't know. I have a friend who can send me emails, but I can never get mine to go through to her, even if I hit reply.

check your outgoing settings - your outgoing mail server (SMTP) might be wrong; or you may be blocked.
