It really IS too early to determine the baby's gender at 12 weeks. When I had my 12 week u/s, the tech actually laughed when I asked her to guess the gender. I'm very surprised that you won't get an u/s at 18-20 weeks...it is the most important u/s from what I've been told. I think it's time for a second opinion or at least time to talk to this doctor and ask him to explain himself. Do some research first..regarding what they test during the 18-20 week ultrasounds, then confront him.
You have every right to request an ultrasound at 20 weeks...don't forget who the mother of this baby is! Just because the doctor says it's not needed, doesn't mean that's true. If I were you, I would definitly be doing some more investigation into this..
Best of luck!! And congrats on your pregnancy!!!

Okay, I just checked my records (I write everything down) and it said that at 12 weeks I had an ultrasound. Yes it's true that 12 weeks is too soon to determine the sex of the baby. However, this is not the reason why they perform an ultrasound at 12 weeks. The reason is simple, the doctors just want to check on the baby to make sure everything is progressing well. At 12 weeks, I actually saw this tiny little person moving (very actively I might add). It was the highlight of my day, I remember like it was yesterday :-) This was a reality check that I was really going to be a mom and from that day forward, I looked forward to meeting my baby. Your doctor won't be able to tell the sex of the baby until you reach about 6 months. I don't like surprises either, so I was very eager to know the sex of my baby. So you still have some more time to go before finding out the sex of your baby. Be patient and hang in there :-)

No, It's Not To Early. I Know This Because My Mother, Sister, And I Knew Our Gender At Our 12th Week. He Was Even Right For All Of Us. All Of Us Were Having Girls. It Also Just Depends On How Good The Equipment Is For Ultrasounds And What Position The Baby Is In. So Good Luck !

It's been my experience that the 12 week ultrasound is done to detect the baby's heartbeat for the first time, since it can't be picked up on the ultrasound machine any earlier (at least that's what my doctor told me). I thought you didn't usually get to know the sex of the baby until you're about 20 weeks along, but I guess with the new technology of the 4D ultrasounds, anything's possible!

My ultrasound at 13 weeks pregnant told me I was having a boy. It was right. So 12 weeks could work.

u have to wait till atleast the 5th month to increase ur chances of the doctor actually being able to tell the difference between the external sex organs. so from 20 wks after.

If I remember rightly, I think you need to wait till around 20 wks to find out the sex. (in the UK if your pregnancy is going well you are scanned at around 12/13 wks and again at 20wks.) Good luck

As far as I know they can't detect the sex of the baby that early. I was told everything is not developed enough to see that early.

Seems to me you've found a good doc. U/S aren't for fun and games or determining baby's sex just because we don't like surprises. They can be and sometimes are dangerous to the fetus, which is why doctors who know what they are doing and know the risks, don't do them unless there is a concern.
