I'm a housewife and have a lot of time on my hands. Anyone have any ideas for cheap/free hobbies?

I have a few suggestions!
1. You have the internet, so you can easily use free programs online and design websites, play online games (like Euchre, Texas Hold 'em Poker, etc), etc. Playing those online games at places like http://games.yahoo.com are even interactive and you can meet some buddies to play with!
2. You should really check out http://www.meetup.com - they are for people in your area who like to get together and do fun hobbies together! Another interactive one and you can search hobbies that you would especially enjoy.
3. Check out your town for places like disc golfing or frisbee golfing. These are always free areas in park-like settings. You basically bring a frisbee, and you go through 18 holes, like golf. A lot of fun!
4. Check out your neighborhood community center- you can take classes in anything from sports, dance, painting, etc and those are usually pretty cheap.
5. Reading is a great hobby! Plus, you can read anywhere. Public library for free, or you can join a program called http://www.booksfree.com. It's not "free" but you can use it like netflix, except for books.
6. Got a camera? Start a photo blog on a free site like, http://www.blogger.com or http://www.freewebs.com. They can be fun and you can share them with your family!
7. Try an online game. My dad is disabled and can't work, so he spends his days in the online world. He plays games like Ultima which is pretty interactive with other people... but those can get expensive. When I have free time, I like to play games like The Sims 2- which are really fun (and a one time charge of 50$, which you can play over and over again). Plus, there are lots of communities in Yahoo Groups that like to play Sims 2 and we write blogs about our families in the game, or talk about things we've discovered. Bird watching is fun. You could, depending on your living arrangements, put a bird feed up & watch the birds. If the seeds are too costly, you may want to consider a bird bath but you'll want to ensure you do not attract mosquitos. If you have a local library, a library card is all you need to access a world of wonderful resources: books, books on tape/cd, cd's, dvd's, some may still have vhs tapes, magazines, old newspapers, computers you can access for free, & some even have access to electronic books that you might be able to acess from home. Volunteering is also another great way to spend your time & there are usually many people who need others & you can make friends & "network" & maybe pick up new hobbies that way.

All the answers are good suggestions, but you need to pick something that you enjoy. It sounds as if doing something with your hands will help you with the quitting, especially the smoking. I found that I used the cigarette as a thing to do with my hands. However, whatever it is has to be what you enjoy. All those suggestions were what the answerer enjoyed. If its arts and crafts is your preference, a suggestion would be collages with found objects. There is no end to what you could do. All you need is glue. You don't need to use a flat surface to glue onto either. The surface can be a found object also. Magazines make could sources for collages too. People are always throwing them out or donating them to second hand stores where you can buy them for very little. Another thing to think about is; do you want to make things that are useful and/or that other people will praise, or do you wish to have the experience of doing it and not so concerned about the outcome.

One way you can get some inexpensive craft supplies is to check out the local Goodwill or thrift stores. Also, check the clearance bins at craft shops/ hobby shops/ fabric stores or anywhere else that sells craft supplies. Another place to check is Freecycle in you area. Many people clean out craft rooms and offer up their supplies.
What type of hobby is up to you and your interests.... if you like to paint, you can get a cheap set of acrylic paints for under $10 at many art stores. Knitting: you only need a set of needles and some yarn (and you can always recycle a sweater). Some people will actually create collages from found objects. Other will comb the neighborhood for discarded items such as furniture and pick them up to refinish and sell.
You're only limited by your own imagination.

Meet one new person a week.
With a computer, buy a digital camera (expensive first time outlay) and start taking pictures...great fun and you will be amazed with the pics you get when "film" is free.
