I want to take part in next years London triathlon but have no experience of training for such an event. I am reasonably fit - I cycle to and from work each day and walk for about an hour a day. Does anyone have any useful hints or tips on the best way to train? Also does anyone know of any web sites that could help?

An excellent place to start is www.beginnertriathlete.com, I did the Olympic distance this year. I swam twice a week peaking at 1.5 miles from a start point of 50 metres! Cycled twice a week and ran twice a week, building to a long run of 10 miles.

The key I think is BRIC sessions . (bike and run in combination) Doing a bike sessions and then going straight to a run. This gets your body used to the shock of changing muscle groups.

Look at the site above there is tonnes of great info there. I am also a member of tritalk.co.uk Lots of experienced friendly triathletes there always willing to answer stupid questions!

Go for it !

Hi,
I have done triathlons for the last two summers. The way I train is I run 3-4 days a week, bike 3-4 days a week and swim 2 times a week. Now running is my weakest event so I try to do that one more than the others. Swimming being my best I do that the least. One day a week is a brick workout where I bike then go for a run right after wards to simulate race day. Start slow when running. Do a run/walk combo and that is totally fine if you do that on race day also. Many people will be walking. A website I go to often is beginnertriathlete.com. It had more specific training plans for any distance from sprint to Ironman. Good luck on your training and hope to see you on beginnertriathlete.com

if you do a googel search under triathlon, it will give some good sites. I have a friend that just started here in the states, and he trains almost every day. He will bike and swim one night then run the next night. He has improved his times and transitions by doing this. Make sure that you buy the best in your equipment, and don't skimp. My friend goes on 45 mile or more rides on the weekends as well.... but the key is constant practice

Go to 'Tri UK' website - I run and swim, and train with Tri atheletes sometimes- all I can say is that they are all very dedicated - you have to be prepared to train a minimum of 5 days a week and on some of those days you will have to cross train. However from your description above you have a good base to start from, and you certainly will have enough time to train for London next year.

Good luck
