I use the ancient chineese art of block blam

Take HDD and grab a Highpowered rifle .308 would do nicely
set HDD out in field line up sights or scope and

BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM

The data blocks are now blammed and you can be assured that it is never going to be read again.

Stand at least 50 yards away to prevent shrapnel and a high powered rifle to prevent ricochets.

Then again there is always thermite.

Microwave it, however this does carry some inherent risk... such as major fire... explosion etc..

more sensibly though you need to disassemble it and smash the platters. this kind of physical destruction will be sufficient to stop the data being reconstructed (unless you have pissed off the us gov. in which case they will rebuild the hdd, recover what data they can and probably make the rest up. ( just kidding I still want to emigrate there!))

If you want to be really sure about no one rebuilding the data( such a small chance if any) then spread the bits you have left through many different bins.

there was a serious answer in there somewhere! damned if i can find it now though.

Take out the disk drive - it's only two cables & four tiny screws.

Have fun dissasembling it & smash the platters (shiny spinny things). Utter destruction. Dispose of the parts in several locations.

100+ watt speakers the magnets should do it.

A hammer works well.

But my favorite is to drill them repeatedly.

Run a magnet over it and then take a hammer to it.
