Go into the website for the college you may be attending, and check out their course calendar.

There are 3 routes to becoming a midwife in the UK. If you are a qualified adult nurse you can do an 18 months course to become a registered midwife as well. If you are not a nurse, you have to do the direct entry course, which is normally 3 years, but there are some 4 year courses. There are 2 types of direct entry course, degree and diploma. The diploma course has the same amount of clinical placement and time in university, but you do less academic work at third year undergraduate level. For degree courses you need A levels/Highers or an Access course normally, and for diploma the minimum requirements are 5 GCSEs(Not sure what scottish equivalent is- sorry). Having more academic qualifications than just GCSEs may be necessary for some diploma courses though.
For courses in England and Wales you apply through UCAS (degree courses) or NMAS (diploma). For courses in Scotland you apply through CATCH.
Check out www.studentmidwives.co.uk for a forum for student midwives, midwives, and midwife-wannabes. It is a fabulous source of information and support in the difficult journey towards becoming a midwife.
It's worth noting that despite the much publicised midwife shortage in the UK, there is huge competition for training places, with some unis having, for example, 400-500 applicants for 25 places. Also, due to NHS budget deficits, some newly qualified midwives are having trouble finding jobs.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Try getting in touch with a midwife in your area. She'll give you better information. May even have the possibility of apprenticeship. What is needed to be a midwife depends on where you live: country, state, province.

The connexions website is quite good, with loads of info about different jobs/ careers. Go to: http://www.connexions.gov.uk/
select connexions direct, then careers and then select careers resources. Then select the jobs4u careers database and type in midwife! Simple as that!

Why not discuss this with an actual midwife in your area?
