Cells are living bodies that make up our tissues. In general, cells are the smallest living structures. There are things like amoebas that are very small animals that are only one cell. But in larger animals, they are made up of many cells, millions and billions of them.

Cells in multicellular organisms have distinct functions. There are nerve cells that carry messages, skin cells that form the outer covering of the body, blood cells that carry blood around the body, cells that grow hair and fingernails, cells that fight off invaders, muscle cells that contract to make the muscles work, kidney cells, liver cells, cells in the intestinal tract that admit nutrients into the bloodstream, and so many more.
