I live w/ my grandmother. I want to move out but I don't have a car. I have been trying to save to get a car first. I am temping and freelance writing and have been waiting to get permanent job before I move out. However I can't take living there anylonger. I am afraid if I move out first I will not be able to save up enough money to get a decent car. What should I do?

I do take Public Transportation where I live ( Columbus, OH). It is not the best for a city of its size.

Get the car first. Then at least you have transportation and the possiblity of getting a better paying job(s) if you are wanting to stay in freelance work since you can travel to work now, then you can move out (maybe even earlier than you originally thought).

That depends on where you live. If you live or move into a big city you always have the choice of public transportation. For instance I live in Minneapolis. Around here everything is close enough were you could get an apartment and a job and take the bus, train, or ride a bike, or walk, pretty much everywhere you need.

You need to stop temping and get something permanent before you can do either. If you work a second job for a few months you could save enough to buy a car (be smart-pay cash for a good used car. don't go into debt). Then you can start planning when and where to move.

Well, coming from a poor 21 year old... I'd suggest saving up your money and living with your grandmother. It sucks, I bet. But I'd put up with it.
You have to remember that when you move out, you have a whole other set of issues:
1. Not only do you have to pay rent, but you have to pay utilities: electricity, water and gas... plus garbage/recyclable services. That can add up. Plus, when you first turn on the water (etc) in your new place, you will have to pay some hefty sign up / turn on fees.
2. Now you have the added bonuses (sarcastically said!) of roommates, especially if you really need those extra roommates to pay the rent and utilities. Roommates can be just as bad as a grandma!
3. I don't know how you are getting to work now, but if you get the new place instead of the car, how are you going to be getting to work? Will grandma still let you borrow the car? Is that going to be difficult to get to work every morning? And if you can't get to work, you won't get money, and then you won't be able to pay for your new place and utilities.
All in all, I'd really suggest toughing it out with dear old grandma for a bit longer- yeah, she's probably not too much fun to live with, but remember, you're paying rent for free-- and you're not paying those expensive utilties. You are in the perfect spot to save up your money and get that car- which will help you get to work, to save up more money for the new place.
It will come to you in good time!!! Good luck!

Save and get a car first. Determine in your mind that you have to deal with the situation of living there until you save the money to get a car. Maybe that will push you to save harder. This is probably one of MANY uncomfortable situations you'll have to live in or with, but you can do it. Determination will get you through.

definately save for a car first.. there's no use in moving out if you have no way of getting around. I guess it depends where you live but here in miami, public transportation isn't all that great...

Get a car first, you can get a decent used car for really cheap. Then you can move out and not have to worry about how you are going to get to work.

Get a car first. You're more likely to get hired by an employer if you have a car. Plus the car will come in handy moving all your stuff out. :-)
