i heard it maybe cheaper to go over to somewhere like amsterdam and fly from there?

London - Boston is pretty cheap. And then the question becomes where in Maine you need to be .. if you're gonna rent a car anyway, it may be cheaper to just fly to Boston and just drive up.

Flying to Montreal generally is more expensive.
Quickest but more expensive is flying to Augusta over Boston.

Consider flying into Boston. As it is a larger airport it should have the best availability and prices of flights.
You can try flying directly into Bangor, Maine, but that could get costly.

I live in Portland, Maine and flew to London from Boston a year ago. It wasn't too expensive.

You can fly to Main but it will not be cheap, its not a major destination. Fly to Boston and then arrange a fight to Main, which is a big State iself, where you want to go there?
