Shiraz, you know I love you like a brother... the kind you try to avoid a family gatherings because he'll trap you in a corner ranting and raving with bits of spittle flying all over... But I digress...
The illegal immigrants generally don't vote, nor do Resident Alliens; voting is a right and responsibility of citizenship.
The idea of border defense has been on the back burner mostly to keep capitalism running smoothly. Capitalism essentially requires a minimum of 5% unemployement to work. The national average is 4.5%, which sounds close but its not because while the rust belt and cities may exceed 5%, huge percentages of the country are below 3.5%.
The illegal work force helps fill certain jobs. And while they do keep wages down in certain industries, that also equates to keeping inflation in check. Aside from that, they don't displace too many workers as they aren't being employed in jobs where there is high demand to work. When they get a legitimate job they pay payroll taxes (as does their employer) for benefits to which they cannot collect. The illegals buy food which keep people employed, they buy clothes, they pay sales tax on items they purchase. As heinous as it may be to hear, they do contribute something.
However, due to the threat posed by terrorists crossing the borders the country needs to shut them down. Sure it means paying more than $10 to get your lawn mowed, but its a price I'm willing to pay for tighter security.
The terrorists know this weakness and are willing to expolit it. Many americans can't tell an arab from a mexican just be looking at them. In addition there are groups in Mexico and other spanish speaking countries "spreading the word" about terror and islamic fanaticism.

Which is why you'll see NO meaningful immigration policy from either party. The Republicans don't want to alienate businesses, and the Dems don't want to risk alienating a minority, especially one that's repopulating the ranks of the labor unions.
Caught an old rerun of "Murphy Brown" the other night, and someone was reading some news from 1977; ironically, the story was about the problem of illegal immigration and a proposal to build a fence. Whether it really was on the radar in '77 or not, it at LEAST was in the late '80s.
So long story short, no one is going to do anything about. It's in the news but will blow over in a few weeks, just like every other "crisis" over the past year.
When Tom Cruise's ouster from his Paramount contract starts supplanting immigration headlines, you know nothing will be done about it.

This cracks me up! If nothing is done it's because the Republicans need cheap labor. If something is done, it's because the Republicans are racists. I get sick of the stupid attacks by the left. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
This isn't something the Republicans are required to do, this is something the nation as a whole should be working on. Defending our borders, not against impoverished farmers, but against terrorism should be the top of every Americans list. Wake up America you are being over run. You are giving your country away. All Americans need to make a stand.

^5, I agree 100%. Im tired of the way ALL administrations have handled border security. Now the problem has gotten so far out of hand that hispanics are the largest minority. Because politicians want to stroke everyone and get the votes, nobody is going to alienate the largest minority of voters by implementing strict border policy. Certainly no Democrat is capable of handling this task.

I agree that we need to secure the borders better...however, I believe it wasn't a RNC or DNC issue...it is something that we need to unite on and get strong on together
The border was weak for a long time now...remeber Bill Clinton was also in office and they were not any problems with the illegals crossing the border...we as a nation just did not seem to care that much back then...we were more distracted by the "sexual relations" that were going on in the oval office...

I am not a Republican. I was once in the United States military.
I am a veteran of foriegn wars. Thank God I was too young to be political, call me air brained if you wish, but I was just American and patriotic. At this point in our history I choose to be just American. If I wish I could start throwing stones at blacks, whites, Mexicans Hispanics, Chinese, or any other ethnic or political group, but if they can prove to me one thing, that they are American, I choose not to throw anything. the point being, we are all in this boat together and we had better wake up, this craft is sinking. We had better wake up and start plugging up these holes together or we will be arguing politics in heaven. OH,SORRY! We wont need politics in heaven, God is the boss in heaven, we won't need politics. Lets do this together Americans, dont forget we can still prove that we are the greatest nation that was ever on this planet, up to this point.

Both parties are catering to their future voter base. It's a competition to see who can win the most mexivotes. I am personally sick of both parties and their negligence on this matter. I am sure it is both of their agendas to grant amnesty and citizenship at one point and then the party who has done the most for them will win a whole new voting base.
Libs say impeach Bush for the war. I say impeach him and all of congress for the illegal immigration issue.

I have been very disapointed in my partys handleing of this issue for 20 years now. Neither party will ever care untill after we have our first spanish speeking president.
Then maybe they will care about the condition of our nation.
Untill then its just talk we will get lots of drugs and cheap labor from your friends to the south.

I agree about the cheap labor. The GOP will talk tough about illegal immigrants but never act on it.
And illegals voting for democrats??? You just pulled that out of thin air right?
