Most viruses these days don't advertise their presence with IE pop-ups. In my opinion, it's more likely that you've picked up some spyware. Do the pop-ups say anything which makes you think you have a virus? Or are they ads?

Download Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org/) and Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5) and run them both. Read the instructions, and get rid of the crap on your machine.

If you're still having the pop-ups, get some anti-virus software and use that. You should be using AV software anyway, whether you think you're infected or not. If you're too tight to pay for it, then AVG do a free download (http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1).
