Mid-length pants with a flared cut, usually worn by women. Popular in the 1920s and 1970s. To be distinguished from peddle-pushers, which have a tailored and tapered cut. They occasionally also refer to a certain cut of women's underwear that straddle the hips.

Culottes are shorts that are very wide in the legs, tapering out from the hips to the knees, so they resemble a skirt but provide the comfort of shorts. They can be above the knee or below the knee. Sometimes, there was also a panel over them, so that they really looked like a skirt. I don't know that they are popular right now, but we were allowed to wear them as part of our uniform at the all-girls high school I attended and we thought we were pretty happenin!
