When I go Start - Shutdown, things go as usual. The computer shuts down. But then 2 seconds later the system just starts up again. I have just formated my computer, so its a hardware problem I think. I have also turned off automatic restarts and this does not solve the problem. I am running XP and service pack 2

Maybe the on switch is damaged...or maybe your hitting "Restart" not shut down....trying shuting down manually that might help...

Yeah, it sounds like you are restarting instead of shutting down. Make sure that you check what is in the drop down menu before you confirm so that it says shut down, not restart.

Try to remove hardware that you have just installed e.g modem

If thisdoes not work go and restore your cmos setting to default then start your machine shut it down and see what happens.

Your restart mode as well as shutdown mode is intermixing with each other.Get it checked .In the meantime go manual.
