I am interested in suggestions, historical and current to give USA a name (Think names like Canada, Finland, Uruguay, and so forth), other than the descriptive United States of America.
If anyone knows the reason why such a name was chosen, I'd be pleased if you'd enlighten me.

And please motivate your suggestions (i'd thought that it would've been obvious, but apparantly not)

Okay, I'd really like only sensible suggestions- don't take your hatred for a loose collaboration of individual sovereign states here! :)

Well, the United States of America was designed to be just that- a union of individual states. (In the case of "state" being a looser term for any individual and unique political and geographic unit.) So in the USA, since each state is seen as being separate and equal, the states themselves have unique names (like Ohio, California, etc.) and the union of them is simply termed the "United States". Remember that the separation of powers in the constitution refers to each state keeping its own measure of sovreignty. To assign a "name" to the whole of the United States takes away something from the individuality of each state- reducing it to being part of a larger whole rather than an individual unto itself.

UiSAsopc (pronounced: You is a so PC)
As to why we are designated United State of America, The 50 states make up the union and we are united (or at least we once used to be) in a country known as America located in North America.
And yes, all other countries in the world are so jealous of our great location in the world and all that we have created out of our Eurocentric culture - thanks to the emigration of LEGAL immigrants from all countries in the world - that they would destroy us. Isn't jealousy a bummer? You come to America legally and you assimilate into our Eurocentric culture. No alternative. Signed, No espeaka the PC.

It's called the United States of America because that's what it is.
At last count there were 50 of those states.

Our way of existence is grown out of the cultural stories of each and all the classic cultures. In our very own way we are respecting them with the help of making use of their achievements in our time-honored lives. you have used Rome, Persia, and the Britons as examples; so enable's concentration on those for now. First, and least confusing is Rome. The roman custom of the Republic is the main obtrusive yet enable's as a replace seem at our militia. The Roman militia became into fantastically knowledgeable and a cellular tension with heavy emphasis on protecting a stable supply line. our strategies and militia company are based upon their concepts. A roman regularly occurring would see many similarities between his legion and our military divisions. next up are the Persians and the Britons. the main obtrusive way we "know" the classic Britons is with the help of our use of their language and with the help of our trip trips, a number of that are derived in part from their gala's. The Persians, oh the Persians. They have been the enemy of the Greeks yet they did help to spurn their Golden age. to no longer point out that their code of rules maximum easily are contemplated in our very own. We, as human beings, won't brazenly renowned our know for those long long gone cultures yet we've equipped ours on their foundations and that's the terrific variety of know i'm able to think of of.

a name by any other name is still the same. United states is what it is .... a supposedly united ( see how they come to the rescue of their own (new orleans) country in that all states can feel equally important, regardless of their color or religion.
