Hiccups or hiccoughs are basically caused by a twitch in the diphragm, which is amuscle that lies usder the lungs.
You've probably had twitches in other muscles, most people have, where the mucle just contracts spontaneously very few seconds. It;s just a glitch in the system. The diaphragm also gets twitches, and when it contracts it forces air out of the lungs.

Hiccups occur because your diaphragm, a muscle that bends and expands when you inhale and exhale, is confused about whether to inhale or exhale. Hiccups mostly occur when your laughing hard and long, and you also breathe less than normal, I think that's what confuses your diaphragm.
