yes, she is one of the few artists that writes her own songs. most of her songs are from her heart because they are things she has experienced throughout life

Mariah Carey has a lot of talent. Too bad she's wasting it on the hip-hop culture. If she wanted to, she could be a real diva like Aretha Franklin or Linda Ronstadt or Annie Lennox. I bet she could do Broadway, and I also believe she could expand her musical horizons. Sure, she stands to lose a lot of her hip-hop fan base, but she has a real chance to be recognized as a true "artist" and she's content to keep playing to the MTV crowd. It's a shame, really.

She may sing from her heart. It is not necessary to have experienced everything in a song to be an artist. It certainly may help.
I find her music so overblown that I refer to it as "Boiling Pablum".
