currently i am looking into moving from Northern Virginia to Northern California. I have a horse and a pony that i am planning on taking with me.
last time i sent a horse halfway across country, she arrived looking like a skeleton and never really recovered from the trip.
i am not going to let that happen to these horses. i looked into flying them out there.
have any of you ever put a horse on a plane? is it more or less expensive that trucking them?
thanks for reading this!

See if there is a reputable trucking company in the area - that has recommendations from people you can contact. Or you can follow the truck all the way there to make sure that it does the required stops. If your primary motivation is your horses well being then for more money you can make sure your horses have a box stall so they can move around while travelling - we used to ship our stallions this way and they were always fine. We used Doyle Horse Transport out of Ontario, Canada but it could be worth contacting them as they have a lot of sales in the US that they go to and maybe they would have a truck going in your direction. It is cheaper if there are more horses on the trailer than just sending one for you.
An alternative is flying which a lot of horses do on a regular basis. IRT (International Racehorse Transport) is a fine reputable company but I don't know how many flying routes they have within the US as we used them for shipping our horses overseas. They don't do just racehorses they all horses - they just started with racehorses hence the name. A lot of expensive, well known horses have flown with them so you know they are well kept!

Personal recommendations are the best. I hope it all works out for you!

All the best!

While flying is more expensive I wouldnt use the previous people you used before. I cant believe your poor horse arrived that way. Since you will pay a lot anyway what about your own truck and trailer? Then you can stop at parks and rest areas to give them exercise and a little green grass.

Flying can be expensive, I knew someone who bought a horse from New Zealand and it was about $8000 to ship him. It might be less going across the continental US, but still a pretty penny.

There are some reputable horse transporters out there. Ask your trainer and around at the bigger shows to get recommendations for someone who can do better than the last one you used.

Do you drive? Have you thought about doiong it yourself? A big hassle, but at least you could keep an eye on them!

When shipping long distances like that it would be a good idea to find a shipper that will stop for 2 nights at a time at least twice during the trip. This will give the horses time to relax, eat, rest, and hopefully not be in such rough shape when they arrive. Many long distance haulers have farms that they regularly stop at.

There are some very reputable long-distance carriers, one example is Sallee Horse Transportation out of Lexington, KY. They routinely transport racehorses coast to coast, and between Florida and Canada. Two years ago I shipped a racehorse from Ocala, FL to Columbus OH using Perry Transport out of Ontario. They did an awesome job and it cost about $650. Good luck!!

There are many horse tranportation groups on yahoo some form chains to help mantain a cheap price some times free. then there are some that have a monitor cam that you can see your horse as they travel state by state. and are by the phone and even call you often to let you know the route maping etc.The news group below should help you out.

I agree with you on not sending them with a horse transportion company. My friend did that with her horse and he was lame the rest of the summer. What about trailoring them there yourself? I haven't heard anything about horses flying. It sounds very exspensive. You could take a train with them. I woud just recomend hauling them there. It would take a while but it would be the safest for them.

Lift them up into the air in a big hot air balloon on one coast. Hold stationary in space. Let Earth revolve around until the other coast is below. Simply lower the horses back to the ground. Ta da!

you can put horses on planes, but it would be better to haul them by trailor, that way you can keep an eye on them in case something goes wrong. they will need to get out and walk around some couse that is a long ride for them. by plane they will get there faster, you will need to make sure that the air line company is trust worthy.

if you can afford flying them then i would fly them.

if you do need to trailer them (for finanacial reasons, or its what you decide) i would trailer them yourself and take breaks to feed them and water them and clean our the trailer of you can. Also you could find out if there are any barns on the way that would let you stop and take your horses out of the trailer to stretch (i would not recommend taking them out on a highway or a rest station).

just try to make the travel as stress free as you can for your horses so they dont get sick. good luck
