Chirac says this is too many. And maybe it is. But if that is the number needed to keep Hezbollah in check I'm all for it. If the terms of the 2000 deal between Lebanon and Israel had been met there wouldn't be a problem today.

According to the deal Israel was supposed to withdraw from Lebanon. The Lebanese government was to disarm Hezbollah. And then Israel was to release all the people it had imprisoned during the occupation.

How can Lebanese government expect to be seen as in control when they let Hezbollah stay armed and dangerous? IF I were Lebanese I might be mad at Israel for what they did in response to the kidnappings. But I would be madder at Hezbollah for starting the whole mess/

Hezbollah is part and parcel of Lebanon politics and everyday life in the considerable Muslim communities of Lebanon. The organization has grown significantly to reduce the once influential Maronite Christians with the aid of outside powers chiefly Iran and Syria. Of course they will not disarm. Even with 15,000 multinational forces (Indonesia, Malaysia - both Islamic nations have declared they will not disarm Hezbollah when their 2,000 peacekeepers are in S Lebanon). Hezbollah are seen as the heroic defenders in Lebanese Muslims' eyes - their resentment are for Israel.
