Ok, lets think about this. If you go out to a restaurant and you order let's say a steak. You ask that it be cooked MR (medium rare) The steak gets to your table and you start cutting into it. By this time the server has left satisfying the demands of 5-8 other tables. Then you notice that your steak has been cooked MW (medium well) and you can not eat it like this. The server comes by to make sure that you are enjoying your food. This gives you a chance to let the server know that you did not like it. What you have to understand is that many people will still eat something they do not care for. Maybe because it may take too long to remake it and everyone else will be done. The servers job is to make sure that you leave happy. They are there to work for their tips not for the wages. So if you continue to eat your food that you don't really care for you will leave unhappy. Therefore the server will not get that 18% tip. This is why the sever asks you how are your meals when you are in the middle of stuffing your face.

Its apparent that most of you have never worked as a server or waitress. You have several tables full of customers -- you must greet them, take orders, put the order into the kitchen, get drinks, clean-up messes, bring out the orders, refill glasses or cups, trouble-shoot the quality of the meal, total up the ticket, clean-up messes, refill glasses or cups -- and you're doing this for 5, 10, 15 or 20 tables. You're busy, and you're coming by a table ... you stop to ask if everything is alright. It's not like you're waiting for some pig to stuff another bite in their mouth just so they can't complain when you ask "Is everything all right?". Give me a break! These people are working hard to serve you, and you need to give them some respect. Nod your head "yes" if it's okay, shake your head "no" if its not. I guarantee if the waitress is worth her salt and deserves the tip, she'll wait to find out why you said "no" and she'll fix it. If you can't at least be human to another person working hard to serve you, maybe you should go home and have a microwave meal next time.

A waitress comes to the table to try and make sure everything is satisfactory. If you have already started eating then there probably won't be a good time when you aren't eating to come and ask. Not to mention they just want to make sure your food is alright and you don't need anything.

Oh and by the way, did you think you were the only person they had to check on. If she/he waited around until you it was a good time for you to stop eating you'd be upset because she was watching you. Or even better do you want him/her to wait until you are in the middle of a conversation with your dining companion?

The best waitpeople are the ones who check on you as often as possible. And maybe they are trying to get a better tip but if it means I'm being taken care of, who am I to complain. Having done it for a little while, I know that many of them really care how well they are doing their job. There are many people in the world who take pleasure in serving others and pride in doing their job well.

I would much rather be asked while my mouth is full than to not be asked at all. Would you prefer to be ignored?

Because it is funny to watch someone try to talk with a mouthful of food. Whenever a waitress/waiter does this to me i will nod my head if i like it, or if i dont i shake my head no and i spit the food back onto the plate. On extreme cases i will get up and run to the bathroom.

Actually, they wait until you have food in your mouth so you can't really answer.
You just nod your head, they go away and they can tell their boss that they did what they were supposed to do.

The dentist does the same thing. Waits until the yucky rubber sheet is in your mouth along with a mirror and probing tool so you can barely breath, and then asks if it is OK.

So I asked my dentist one day why he waited until he had all the stuff in my mouth to ask me a question. His answer?

"Because I don't really want an answer."

And no, he's not my dentist any more!!!

i know, right?

especially when we need something we could have been just sitting there talking for like 5 minutes and waiting for them to show up so we can ask them for that thing we need and as soon as we shove an enormous bite in our mouths she comes and you have to make her wait until you're done with your bite to ask for what we need.

it pisses me off...."as you were walking over you saw me put the most enormous bite known to man into my mouth...could you not have waited 30 seconds?"

The perfect server is very hard to find! They come over when we don't have a gigantic bite in our mouth....and they constantly are refilling our drinks...i drink a lot when i'm eating out.

Because you may want more of something. Or you may have a complaint, but didn't want to interrupt her by getting up. Or it's
just a way of saying, "I see you guys are eating, I'm here if you
need anything else".
Don't take it so negatively.
She's just insuring you remember she was available for your
needs. So you'll remember to leave her a tip.

I know what you mean. You're right in the middle of chewing and she/he wants to carry on a conversation. Nothing more annoying, just chock it up to that's how it goes when you interact with other humans. They almost always get in the way.
