There are two things you can do to speed things up. First, get as much memory as you can afford. Why? Because when you're working or playing games, information is being stored for easy access. Your RAM (random access memory) is the first place the information goes, When you run out of RAM, any additional information is stored on your hard drive in virtual memory. RAM is electronic, a hard drive spins and is mechanical. Therefore, retrieving info from RAM is faster than retrieving it from the hard drive.
The second thing you should do on a regular basis is Disk Cleanup and Defrag.
Click start > programs > accessories > system tools and you will see both options. Do the Disk Cleanup first. After it analyzes your system, checkmark everything and run it. Be patient, it could take a while. After the Disk Cleanup is finished, do the Defrag. This could take a few hours depending on when you last did a defrag.
Of course, you should also have a current antivirus and antispyware on your computer. Make sure you actually use them.
This site will give you some good info about memory in general:

Hope this helps.

Make sure there's room on your motherbaord for more RAM. Lots of laptops only have one slot for RAM. You could sell your 256 and buy a 512 if your motherboard will support that.

you might want to buy more memory, but thats not going to make it run any faster. the less disk space you have, the quicker it will run. And also it depends on which company you are with thats running your internet. I like either sbcglobal or comcast, they both run real fast. hope i helped a little.

XP requires at least 512MB of ram memory although it will run with 256 (but slowly). Also - download "track eraser pro" to erase all those cache/temp files that have accumulated over time.
