Originally, we were supporting people that were really in need... Wait a minute... that IS a bunch of bull. These people want money for doing nothing... I see garbage on the side of the road, pot holes in the road, and weeds grown sky high. I believe that since we have to pay, it should be our choice where the money goes. I would pay to have my passage to work free of garbage and pot holes. My car would be cleaned while I work. And they need to have someone at the exit door at work telling me I did great today and they thank me for giving them a chore to feed their family.
That shouldn't be too much to ask. Oh yeah, in the event of bad weather, they bring my car up to the entrance where I am employed.

I never thought I would collect unemployment or be without medical coverage. I have no problem working. My philosophy has always been “Hard work never killed anybody.” Guess what? I have been in that position 3 times in the last ten years. Not because I was lazy, not because I wanted something for nothing. First company downsized so their stock wouldn’t drop. After the third wave of downsizing the stock went form 25 to below 5 per share because investors are not that stupid. The second time the work all went to China. The third time the company drained all the profit and just closed the door. I was glad there was something to fall back on so I was able to save my house. I also know what it feels like to walk into a hospital and someone in your family needs an operation and you have no coverage. Yes I was paying my part of COBRA but my darling former employer totally screwed that up as well. I was also told at the next closing we were getting severance pay, which came two months after the fact. You are living in fantasyland and I hope you never have to live in the real world because it will blow your mind because you are so naive.

Not being American I will toss in my 2 cents (just don't try to change the Canadian coins lol)
I think that health care that was subsidized and available to all would save money. we all know when people are really sick they will get treated without worry of who can pay, usually in a ER with high costs, regular preventative Dr visits would resolve this.
welfare on the other hand should be tied to something. Either school, learning something that will help them get a job, not "art" or such, or some kind of work, street sweeping, shovelling snow, what have you. those who want to sit at home should not get cheques. now if you are physically or mentally handicapped that's different.

Thank goodness it is your country you are talking about and not mine.
Here we have a bit more respect for those less fortunate than we are. We have also evolved past the point of "me at all cost". I don't mind paying taxes. NOthing is perfect but I am glad that people can get medical care if they need it.
What I do kind of mind is people who make instant judgements about others. How can you possibly know what that other family has been through?
Have you ever wondered why being a doctor is so highly prized in the U.S. Is it the double shifts and late hours or the incredible piles of money? Things are out of balance there.

Given a choice, the vast majority of people unemployed and poor, would choose to be employed and self sustaining. Some in these situations are freeloaders, but the vast majority are not. Through life's trials, many have not made the right choices, having children in their teens, rejecting an education, using drugs and abusing alcohol. We cant punish all for the laziness of a few. Offering people a way to help themselves, and become self sufficient is the answer, not turning our backs on the unfortunate.

Another idiot repuglican that don't want to pay his taxes. It is a shame that you are so unpatriotic that you have come to this. Socialized medicine is the answer to this whether you like that concept or not. But think about it the insurance company's make billions in profit, if you take their profit out of medical care it would have to be cheaper. They are the root of the problem anyway.

Can you say...liberal entitlement programs? Let's take care of our infirmed...TEMPORARILY those that have fallen on hard times...but a good part of our "systems" encourage dependence on the government which in turn allows politicians to control people and stay in power as they hand out the goodies. You know I NEVER got a job from a POOR man (or women)...try this...tax the rich less...incent them to invest in businesses that create jobs that pay people that creates a bigger tax base which brings more money into the government which can pay down the deficit which results in less foreign "control" of our debt...which can result in lowering taxes for all which gives us more money in our pockets and a better standard of living...WHAT DON'T WE GET HERE!!!??? A key part of this is protecting our borders, language and culture...but that's another discussion...

Because we are measured as men by how we treat our lessors and those more misfortunate than we are.
Because every man, reguardless of power or wisdom is vulnerable to tragedy. We would hope that if we fall down someone would help up up.

it isn't the working man vs the nonworking man, it is the man with opportunities and wealth helping the man without. since you obviously wouldn't do it on your own, cuz you don't sound very generous, the gov't has to ask you to do it. i know many very hard working families that still have to be on medicare/caid because even with all the work they do, they can't afford diabetes supplies or other necessary medications. grow up and be nice to other people
