For more reasons than any one of us can think of.
Mostly, he just redifined basketball as we know it. Just like Gretzky in NHL, the rules had to be changed for Jordan. Detroit even had their own way to defend him, and wrote a book about it for the other teams!! No other player in history has had that honor.
Added to which, he owns almost every record there is.
Also, 6 championships, 1 college championship, and countless medals too.
Myself, I think he is the best ever because he was my childhood idol. Because of him I became interested in bball, and played my whole life. Because of him, I tried to be a better person, just like him.
Like I said, he is the best for more reasons that anyone can think of...

He could score as many points as he wanted to, but realized that the whole team had to be involved if the Bulls were ever going to be a championship team. He was a fantastic offensive player and a great defensive player and still seemed to step it up with the game on the line.

mj was a great player but to say he was the best is an injustice to the game...it took the likes of bird, magic, and kareem to fade away before he won championships....bill russell won as a rookie and played in 12 nba finals in 13 years in the league winning 11 of them...and he did this as a contemporary of the great wilt chamberlain...please look at nba basketball in its entire context in terms of history and you will see why michael was no where near the best
