My first thought is that it's named after the city of Washington D.C. Maybe because that's where the company's first office was located. But I'm just speculating.

DC Comics is one of the largest American companies in comic book and related media publishing. A subsidiary of Time Warner, DC is responsible for such famous characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman and their teammates in the Justice League. For decades, DC Comics has been one of the two largest American comic book companies, along with the Marvel Comics. The initials "DC" were originally an abbreviation for Detective Comics, and later the official name. DC Comics should not be confused with British comic publisher D.C. Thomson.

DC used to stand for Detective Comics. At one point, when DC was still known as National, it began absorbing an amalgamating other comic companies into its fold. One of these companies was Detective Comics Inc. who published the title "Detective Comics". During the 40's, "Detective Comics" and "Superman" were National's top selling titles and they decided to put a round logo on the top of all the books they published to remind children buying comics that the same makers of Detective and Superman were responsible for these titles as well. This logo simply said "Superman-DC". In later years the logo was modified to the various versions of what is now the "DC Bullet" that appears in the top corner of all the publishers books to this day.

Many fans and collectors used the term "DC" to refer to National because of the logo. After Warner Brothers merged with the company in the 70's, the name was permanently changed to "DC Comics" in order to unify the brand under its more popular nickname.
