same as when you try to fall asleep asap cause the next day you have to wake up early. and you end up watching late night TV.

To be short - everything explains by your reflexes.
There is some time of the day your body is used to falling asleep, it is like a simple average. It is normal state for your body and natural to trigger the mechanisms of dream at that time. So your condition begins to resemble the one when your are asleep if you cross that "normal time". It is not just your eyelids but the decelerating digestive and mental processes etc.
Don't fight - you'll lose anyway.

i think your eyelids are just getting heavy. if you don't fight it, i bet they will also close.

I like it when the telly screen starts to roll, and you can see loads of them, all on top of each other. (obviously, I don't mean this literally - the effect when your eyes roll...)
