This list is the current best security freeware. I'd use Avast! antivirus, Ewido anti trojan, Ad-Aware SE Personal and a firewall.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Shields Up security site, check your firewall works

http://www.opera.com/ Opera web browser
Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.

Softpedia is good. I recomend if you aren't really a computer person download AVG antivirus, its good and effective. Alternatively if you are pretty niffty with a PC then download NOD 32 it is a 30 day trial, then search online for an NOD fix program that will extend your trial to 300 or so years. Insane I know!!!

I would be very careful when downloading FREE antivirus software. Some actually contain viruses.
It is too important to leave to chance, I would buy a quality product.

from your yahoo answers window, you should see a Norton Antivirus advert. Click on it to download the norton antivirus software free. At least you'll have it for free for 30 days.

Go to the Computer Active magazine site @ www.computeractive.co.uk where you will be able to search for free anti-virus software in the downloads section. Try AVG as this is one of the most popular and effective free firewalls out there with free updates and lot's of extra's
This sites also good for free anti-spyware, firewalls and any other programs you may need.

Hi, I have been using AVG Free for two plus years now. It is produced by a company known as Grisoft. They produce a variety of anti-virus and firewall products. This one happens to be free of charge. It is very easy to set up and configure. You will get no spam from the company for having used their product. They have a free version of their product merely in the hopes that users of it will like it so much they will want more and by some of their other products.
I have never had a virus attack my systems since using this product. And I work as a sys admin for a major software and internet service provider in Seattle Washington. I am in no way connected to the company that produces this product. I merely use it and have had wonderful results from having done so. Therefore I feel endorsing their product is the least I can, for a free of charge product. The URL to access this product is:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1. Give it a try.
