"The foundation" or "the base" is the meaning of the word.
It is a Sunni Islamist organization with the stated objective of eliminating foreign influence in Muslim countries. The most prominent members of the group are adherents of Salafism, a fundamentalist sect of Sunni Islam. While Osama bin Laden is generally recognized as the group's ideological leader, the group's operations are not highly centralized, and several independent and collaborative cells exist in multiple countries.

The name Al Qaeda roughly means "the Base." It was not founded by Osama, but rather an ally with the US during the Afghan/Soviet War.

Hello James,
'Al' means 'The'
'Qeada' means 'Record'
so Al-Qeada Means "The Record"
Osama Bin Laden Never offically named his group as Al-Qeada.
During the Afgan - Soviet war, The Talibans made a records of all their soldiers name and designation. So, in Arabic, this record was called 'Al-Qeada' meaning 'The Record'. And Even today we Refer to Osama's group and his men to be from Al-Qeada.

Dude, these people who answered you are morons. They don't understand your question. They are so busy with the rah rah that they didn't know you asked a serious question. I think it means "student" as in students of islam. Not positive, but in the right ball park. *Forget that - the guy who answered "the base" above is correct.
