The URL below has free compilers, editors, tutorials, articles and reviews. It is a good place to start learning which languages have what benefits and make a decision on a first language.
Remember, you learn a first language to learn how to program, not necessarily to learn the language because it is so useful. Start with something simple, like BASIC (not Visual Basic!), Pascal (not Delphi) or Python. Learn to design the program and follow the designs in that language, flow control structures and proper documentation. Then you can pick a language like Java, C, C++ or something else more useful for what you'd want to create. If web design is your game, then you'll need to learn HTML and CSS first, then add scripting languages like PHP, ASP and Javascript.
