could you explain what is meant by non-diegetic?????

all i can think... other than to show the era at the time.... is that maybe it is also to appeal to a younger coulture.

The film is aimed at young people.... Pop music also appeals to young people.. therefore it appeals to more people... on a audio level aswell.

you should be able to write a couple of hundred words on those two topics.

Forget the advice it's to target a younger audience, I very much doubt many 13-21 year olds know who Curtis Mayfield is for example. Nor does that have anything to do with the question.

The non-diegetic sound in Bend It Like Beckham is there to highlight the emotional responses of the character and connect the audience to the events on the screen. The soundtrack to this film seeks to draw the audience in while furthering the plot without dialogue. Humour and sadness are the main emotions expressed through the music. While the music is non-diegetic, because the characters can't hear it, the characters feel the emotions expressed through the music inside.

Non-diegetic: sound is heard outside of the film's diegesis (such as film scores and voice-overs. A pop song that seems to be part of a the soundtrack but is found to be coming from, say, a car radio, is a diagetic sound.).

little trick. google define:"type in your word" searches the web for your definitions.

Assuming it means the radio and stuff I'm assuming its to familiarise the characters. Make them seem more normal and accessible. Listening to Britney on the car radio...

Non-diegetic sound:
Sound whose source is neither visible on the screen nor has been implied to be present in the action:

narrator's commentary
sound effects which is added for the dramatic effect
mood music

Non-diegetic sound is represented as coming from the a source outside story space.
The distinction between diegetic or non-diegetic sound depends on our understanding of the conventions of film viewing and listening. We know of that certain sounds are represented as coming from the story world, while others are represented as coming from outside the space of the story events. A play with diegetic and non-diegetic conventions can be used to create ambiguity (horror), or to surprise the audience (comedy).

Another term for non-diegetic sound is commentary sound.

It is used to help the movie flow, if I remember right the movie is told from several points of view, and the music is used to tie them together.

1. To give the film a 'date'
2. To attract a young audience.
3. So they can market a soundtrack CD.

One of the main reasons for this is to locate the film in its contemporary cultural setting.
