The answer is NO. Each person has absolute control over his/her acount. So if you delete a contact he's only not on your list anymore but that does not remove you from the contact's list. So what you have to do is block/ignore the contact so he can't reach you any longer. To ignore a contact:

Click the "Messenger" menu in Yahoo! Messenger and select "Preferences."
Click the "Ignore List" category.
Select the option labeled "Ignore only the people below."
Click the "Add" button.
Enter the yahoo_user_id of the contact you want to ignore.
Click the "Ignore" button.
Click "OK" at the bottom of the window.

I think you can ignore up to 100 contacts. Or better still simply click on ignore anyone who is not on my messenger list.

Cheers.

No... and furthermore, unless you choose to block that person, they can also tell when you are online and IM you - even though you no longer can, (see when they are online I mean, you could still potentially IM them too, but would have to re-add their name).

It is not possible. You control your list and the other person controls his/her list.
