a month ago, he has been back in the game for 2.5 weeks. It still hurts some but he is tough. I need to know some exercises he can do to strengthen it back up and how is the best way to support it during practice and games? tape? lace up mobile brace? both? nothing?

it sounds stupid but to strengthen his ankle run short sprints making a lot of quick cuts, cutting quickly will strengthen the tendons and muscles around the ankle. also have him stand on the edge of a step or box and raise up on the tips of his toes this works the ankle region and the calves.

I agree with everyone who says rest it. He is still young and thinks he's a superman but if he hopes to play later on in high school, college or even beyond, now is when he definitely needs to take care of his body. It's a good thing that he doesn't have any fractures in the bones but the ligament and tendons are still tender and will continue to be until he stays off it for an extended period of time. At the very least have him wear a brace whether playing or training. Always ice down the injury after playing or working out. One exercise that is very simple is to sit with you're foot elevated and simply roll your ankle around in both directions. You can support your leg on a chair or simply hold it up in the air. What this does is circulate new blood into the ankle where surely swelling developed when he first injured it. Doing this excercise is important because it does so with out weight to the ankle. Once all the pain is gone or at least the majority there are other exercises that are much more intense, one being, buy a soft weighted ball at least the size of a small basketball. While supporting yourself in a doorway stand on it with your bad ankle and roll your foot around. Start off by supporting yourself then once your confident try to balance yourself without support. You'll be pain free in no time. Always remember ICE, ICE,ICE........

I sprained my ankle sophmore year in college. The team trainer diagnosed it and sent me to the team doc for x-rays. According to them every thing was fine. There was still pain...but I played through it. The following season my ankle was so bad that I would spend an hour before practice and an hour after practice with the trainer. I finally got tired of his repeated...."just a sprain...be tough". I sought a 2nd opinion. MRI showed bone chips within my ankle. I had it scoped and was back on the field six weeks later.
1st....seek a 2nd opinion. 2nd...they make giant rubber bands that you use for strength resistance, obtain one and use it. 3rd...advice from above regarding cutting and sprinting drills..follow it.

Are you sure it was just a sprain ??It should of been OK by now .he could have a hairline fracture if your sure it is only a sprain tape it up and use a pain / heat gel or spray on it and he should not play for another 2 weeks he could be keeping the sprain new if he plays so it needs time to heal.

i have had a pretty banged up ankle before, and what i found helps the most is if you either tape, or wrap it up fairly tightly... this is to help stop against any excess movement of the whole foot. if possible try wearing another pair of socks on the foot as well

tape. has he been cleared by a doctor to go back in the game. sometimes a sprain is worse than a break. i'd put one of the ace bandages on it.

In high school and college we were REQUIRED to get our ankles taped before every practice and every game. IF they were not taped, we didn't play. In high school we had to do it ourselves, in college the trainers did it. It did save on many many sprained ankles. I suggest you either find someone to tape his ankles or have him learn how to do it himself.

if its still hurting he shouldnt be playing on it, strengthen it back up first. then play on it, other wise he could easily rehurt it and it could be worse.
