Sammy Hagar for real! Better singer, better performance, better personality. Roth, too much into himself, and the circus act he was always doin. Van Halen took off when Sammy arrived. Even separately, Sammy did better than Roth.

No one can deny the massive talent of the Van Halen brothers. Musicians extraordinairre, they pioneered a form of bombastic rock that shook up the market in a big way. And they further proved that success was still obtainable without their enigmatic frontman, David. Still, nobody that is familiar with all manefestations of the supergroup can deny that the best line-up had David, Alex and Eddie under one tent (No slam on you, Sammy, you did a great job).
As part of a front man team, I can identify with David to a certain degree, in that it is your charisma and energy that often causes the audience to love the group. Where I differ with the legendary rocker is Me & Jake always loved our boys, and there was never any distance between us. Everybody knew their part that they had to play, and no one considered one to be above another.
If I had a criticism of Dave, it would be that at times his love of music seems to be secondary to his love of the footlights. This is a recipe for disaster with players of the ilk of Eddie and Alex.
By the same token, I think the Van Halen brothers are somewhat guilty of diminishing the value of the front man. This is the hardest job on the stage, and very few have the charisma to pull it off. David sensed their devaluation of his skills, and often reacted in an emotional way.
At the end of the day, these three titans of rock allowed their inability to understand one another to escalate into one of the greatest losses in rock n' roll history. What music would they be producing today had they worked in harmony towards a common goal?

David Lee Roth, because he was he original. But like most people who get rich, he turned into a jerk. Sammy Hagar is a lot more mature than David and can sing well. And I liked him before Van Halen and after he left. But since David was the original, I still have to pick him.

Hagar was the bigger tallent and definately had a better synnergy with the band but he just made them like every other band of the time. Diamond Dave was a solo act with a back-up band but when he was at the reigns Van-Halen put out their best music and was something special.

No question about it. David Lee Roth. Roth is the ultimate frontman. He knows how to keep the audience in mesmerized, Hagar can't touch him on this one!
Plus, listen to the music with Roth, good time party music! Once Hagar joined, they seemed to have lost their sense of humour, and started their decline.
Also, their best selling albums were with Roth, and they enjoyed their most success with him.
I just hope they can both put their difference aside and reunite. The reunion would shatter the world!
