Not everyone died at that age and yes certainly women reached menopause. Onset of menstruation used to be a lot later than it is now, partly because people were not so well fed as they are now. Also note that we have grown a LOT taller and heavier than in previous centuries.

Study demography, the history of population. It is fascinating. It's a myth that people married very early - this was actually very rare and average age at first marriage for women was in their mid twenties, men a bit later, because to marry you had to have enough money to set up home together. It was not normal to marry and live with parents, at least not in England.

Some women died in childbirth - the risks of that were much higher then, but those that married and were able to conceive, tended to have children over a longer period of years than we do now, for obvious reasons. You will need to read up on the subject to get a better idea of what proportion of women lived to an age where perimenopause and menopause may have kicked in.

The average for reaching the menopause these days is 51.
I will be 51 this week and have not had a period since February this year, so will be officially menopausal, bang on target, if I have no more periods, in February 2007.
A hundred years ago the average was lower.

many women lived into old age-past 40, although many did die in childbirth. but, yes many did reach the menopause it was a matter of social class and having the money and to have good food and good hygiene to live in to old age.
The poor died young, the labourers etc..but the good old middle and rich classes lived on and had all the aches and pains we still have today.
