Try using Spybot Search and Destroy, It has a useful tool called Teatimer which allows you to block any attempt to add details to your startup and registry, It is not an active spyware prevention though, but when prompted to scan it will find and remove the problems.

It is also Free

I used to use Avast Free edition virus scanner, this is an excellent tool and one I highly recommend, it detects any virus found and will give a voice warning, it also has an option to scan in safe mode which a lot of virus software does not,

try www.filehippo.com as this is a really useful website for downloading such tools.
