Genetics and diet have much to do with this.
You also have unreal idea of American's height.
Average American male is 5'9", with women being slightly less than 5'7". Also, very few Chinese are as tall as Yao Ming.
However, I do have some information to share with you about how to grow taller, provided you are less than 25 years old, or not too much older.
Human Growth Hormone is the primary determinant of how tall someone will grow, and this is determined partly by genetics, partly by diet, and partly by the work you do.
You are correct in not wanting to take medicines or surgery. The only medicine that works is Human Growth Hormone injected into your stomach by a Physician. All the others tend to break down, and generally don't work.
You may stimulate the production of your naturally produced HGH through exercises, although basketball is not the best. Those few people simply have been blessed with the right combination of genes, diet and exercise.
The best way to stimulate HGH is with weight-lifting and cardiovascular exercises. Lift as much weight as you can for 8-12 times. in a variety of exercises. Bench press, military press, bicep curl, tricep curl, lunges, dead lift, squats and a number of weigh lifting exercises. Several exercises, 8 to 12 repetitions, with three sets in one day, every other day. You need the rest day. You also need cardiovascular exercises that raise your heart rate for at least 20 minutes, but an hour would be better, after you build up to this. Strenght training and cardio will help to set the body up to produce HGH so you can grow.
Heavy weight lifting should not be done more than every other day. Cardio can be done every day, but perhaps a light cardio on the days you lift, and strenuous cardio on the days you do not lift.
Food: You will need to eat much protein. Beans and legumes are the best source, but also, if acceptable, fish, and possibly meat and chicken. You should also eat a number of vegetables, and the easy rule for this is to eat fresh vegetables and fruits, preferably not overcooked. Eggs can also be a good source of protein.
You can do nothing about your genetics, but because of a balanced diet, Americans are on average nearly two inches taller than they were in a previous generation.
The weigh lifting and cardio exercises will also help. Swimming is my preferred method of cardio exercise, but you can run, or jog or anything else that raises your heart rate to optimum rate.
If you are in good health, subtract your age from 220, and multiply by 85 percent. Example 220 - 20 years = 200. 200 X 0.85 = 170. If you were twenty years old, you want to exercise AT LEAST 20 minutes per day with a cardio exercise to maintain your heart rate at 170 beats per minute. 20 is really just maintenance, and if you want to grow, you probably need to do at least 60 minutes, but this can be broken up into 3 20 minute sessions.
Good Luck to You

I don't think it's really basketball. I'm an Asian, a Filipina specifically, and most of us enjoy basketball here in my home country. We have about five known leagues for the sport excluding those yearly leagues we prepare for geographical and school events (including them will make the number over a hundred). But still, our average height is 5'2" (........)! Our players being sent on international competitions aren't so tall at all (average height would be 5'9).
Since you don't want to hear of artificial solutions, I do think your height depends on your genes. I've read that 50% comes from your mom, 50% comes from your dad, but all these only with proper nutrition.

It is not exercise that makes you grow.Itis genetics. It is the growth plate in your bones that makes you how tall you are going to be.If the growth plate is injured it will cause the bone to quit growing. Also the amount of growth hormone in your body affects your height. There is no exercise to improve your height. The basketball players you see on t.v. were" born" to the height they are through genetics. There are no artifical ways to make yourself taller.
