Mumbai has three rivers, the Mithi river (earlier known as the Mahim river), the Dahisar river and the Poisar river. Most Mumbai residents would be surprised to know this as all these “rivers” today are little more than nallahs. Many residents mistake them for open gutters. The main river, the Mithi river which flows through the heart of the city as it today stands, has suffered many depradations. It has not been cleaned or de-silted for a long time. Hundreds of factories along its banks deposit their refuse directly into this river. It is on the banks of this river that the mangrove forests were removed to make place for the Bandra-Kurla complex. It is into this river that the refuse of the Bandra-Kurla Complex and of many other areas like Kalina, Bandra, Powai, etc. flow. It is this river which is expected to The unkindest cut of all was the Worli-Bandra sea link which was to connect north Mumbai to the south by a privatized causeway to be built over the sea. To save some funds the alignment of this causeway was made such as to pinch the mouth of the Mithi river. The mouth of the Mithi river is probably now only ½ of what it was earlier. Environmentalists had earlier warned that the pinching of the mouth of the river and denuding of its banks would result in massive flooding. That this was the only outlet to be relied upon to remove out such huge quantities of water spelt the doom of Mumbai.

Yes Mithi river is a river and it is mostly polluted due to the mixing of sewage, hazardous waste and industrial waste. This river acts as the natural drainage during monsoons. Longtime ago due to mangroves it was nominated as a bird sanctuary. But now only waste lies here. Although the BMC had in 2005 announced plans of cleaning the river up but nothing seems to have changed.

River Mithi (also Mahim River) is a river in Salsette Island, on which the city of Mumbai is located. It is a confluence of tail water discharges of Powai and Vihar lakes. The river is seasonal and swells during the monsoons. The overflowing lakes also contribute to the river flow which is stopped by a dam in other times. During this season the river is a favourite with the anglers who catch large fish that have escaped from the lakes. Fishing is barred there.
The river is also a natural drainage channel which carries the excess waters during the monsoons. However it is filthy mainly due to the presence of slums and the discharge of industrial effluents.
The river originates at Powai and meets the Arabian Sea at Mahim Creek flowing through residential and industrial complexes of Powai, Saki Naka, Kurla, Kalina, Vakola, Bandra-Kurla complex, Dharavi and Mahim over a distance of about 15 km.
The river bed is narrow in the initial stretch and is about 10 meters wide but at Bandra-Kurla complex, it is much wider
