Instead of saying he is "good for nothing"...try building his self confidence so that he will feel pride and independence about getting a job and supporting himself

Seems like more than him you need some suitable advice.
Am sure he is not keen about sitting at home and doing nothing, but since you and others in the family have such an opinion and do not like that, he is trying to be a rebel by acting so.
Change your attitude, ignore his activities. He is sure to turn around.

sorry . your approach is wrong, how can you say he has good for nothing and put him in the corner . 18 is not big age just he is in his teen. You want him work and do some thing and make money totally Wong your attitude . Even if he is not trying be cool with him and guide him and tel about happening around the world .One day he will be big man then you go on praising him . so just Stop blaming give love and care

Call up you local Army, Navy and Marine recruiters and schedule home appointments. They will come to the house and talk to him- REALLY talk to him. One of two things will happen. A) He will pursue a career in the military or (B) He will be extremely motivated to do whatever he has to in order to stay out of the military.

I have the same problem with my son only he's 28 I say we kick them and their attitudes right out the door and let them try to figure it out for themselves. They are individuals and need to take the out come of the rest of their lives on them selves. I've got my own life to worry about, don't you? Let's force them to do life!!!

I think, you people have to get the blame because if he is good for nothing it's because of your pampering him from his childhood which makes him like that.
Try to find out what is taking him aback and for better, consult a psychiatrist.
