If you have an awful lot of snails in your tank, it can pollute the water by using things such as "Snail Control". Snails that are knocked out, if not taken out of the tank, will decompose and pollute the water.
Some tropical fish will eat snails. Ask at the local aquatic shop which fish will help to clear snails. I always thought that Clown Loaches were good at keeping snail levels down.
A sensible number of snails in a tank will do no harm but once you have a few you can soon have hundreds!

Most products like these do not work. OK they kill some of the snails but the problem remains.
The best solution is a snail eating fish cichlids, snakeheads as well as the above mentioned. Also keep removing and the problem should resolve its self.
Do not use the snail killing stuff as a dead snail produces high levels of ammonia as it decomposes. The ammonia level is most critical in any tank the higher the ammonia the harder it is for a fish to breath.

I thought snails were a good thing - I believe they help keep the tank clean by eating the gunk accumulating on the bottom and sides. If they are not at infestation level, why not leave them be? Don't really understand the problem but removing the fish and giving the tank, gravel and accessories a really sound cleaning (the gravel would take ages) should surely work, if you really are hell bent on the termination of gastropod services.

Firstly u can get a product called snail away.... To prevent snails soak all plants that u buy in water and add table salt to the water (quite a bit) that the plants are in to kill the snails. Then plant the plants in the tank. Also u could get a pleco (cat fish). They like snails. Water changes also help with a gravel cleaner available cheap from all pet stores... WHATEVER YOU DO DO NOT EMPTY YOUR TANK DESPITE WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID...... IT TAKES AGES FOR A TANK TO MATURE

I hate those pesky snails!
I had an infestation which came into my tank via a plant i brought and lazily forgot to soak it in anti snail.
i still now have a few left and that was months ago.
they breed so quickly and so fast that getting all of them can be a pain, you only have to have one egg and one then one snail, then loads!
i sympatize
i take mine out, squash them, laugh then throw them in the bin!
this is very time comsuming tho and it gets almost obsessive as every time i walk past i get another snail.
You can buy some medicines which work fine, but you have to be carefull not to over dose and do it for the correct anount of time, but again, it only takes one super strong snail, or egg to survive.
I dont use anti snail as i have baby's and several pregnant fish at one time and dont want to risk it.

Indeed, don't bother with any 'snail killers', they make even more problems. The snail population is limeted by food availability, feed less (and skip feeding several days a week) and remove any snails you see. Don't get a 'snail eater' either, most grow large (clown laoches) or are too aggressive to be kept in a community tank (puffers).

Empty & clean your fish tank. Then pour some boiling water all over the inside of the tank to kill any snails & their eggs..Also soak the pebbles, sand & other aquarium decorations that you've taken out of the tank in hot water for several minutes to kill the rest of the snails & eggs.

Copper. Invertebrates like snails are sensitive to copper. You can use Aquari-sol (or any copper based ich medicine) or If you have a copper coin of some kind (like an American penny) you can put that in your filter You will have to remove the shells at some point though.

We haven't tried anything like this but my other half used to squash them. You could always get some fish that will eat them too e.g.Clown Loaches are supposed to eat them (but ours spend more time hiding!).
