President Bush himself has accepted personal responsibility for the government's failure in the wake of Katrina. Why? Because the National Weather Service did inform the president that New Orleans is the only major U.S. city located below sea level, and that it could not withstand a category 5 hurricane. The day before the hurricane hit New Orleans, it was listed as a category 5 (when it actually hit, it was a category 4). Bush delegated the responsibility to the then-FEMA director, Mr. Brown. The president has to be more involved than that in a pending disaster. Also, the current president admitted his error publicly because his approval rating was taking a serious hit, and he needed to repair his image by standing forward and courageously taking responsibility. I saw Bush's admission (deliberately staged in front of Jackson Square in New Orleans) of failure, and was astounded at how democratic-sounding the speech was. He tried to appear totally "compassionate". His words seemed like something Hillary Clinton might say. It's amazing what a dive in one's approval ratings can produce!!

According to Democrat's Hurricane Katrina was Bush's fault. The one thing they never mention when complaining about responce time is that the federal government can not come into an area without getting a request for assistance from the governor of the state. President Bush asked the Louisiana Governor to make the request before Katrina hit but she waited until after the levies broke. Also the mayor of New Orleans did not follow his own disaster plan if he had all those school buses that were flooded out wouldn't have been there because they would have been used to get people out of the way of Katrina long before she hit. But as the Democrats have nothing better to do than whine all you ever hear is it was Bush's fault.

part of the inaction took place because the first line of defense in a disaster starts at the local level, if that fails, all levels will fail. This happened to be the largest disaster on American soil, it had nothing to do with race, income levels, or any of the blame game ideas. When a large hurricane is headed your way, take action, don't wait for the clean-up crew to pick up the slack. Ask yourself why were there so many buses sitting under water? was that the federals responsibility, or the local government? Hopefully next time there is a major event, people will take action first, not later.

Because they took toooooooooooo long to respond with help.
They didn't investigate the degree of the disaster until it was a
photo-op. They didn't send guards, food, water, & supplies in a
timely fashion. Whenever there is a disater in other countries
the Gov. of USA is the 1st to respond. The Gov.Blanco dropped
the ball, but I expected it, thus , so should the government.
If 1 person isn't capable of performing his job he should be
circumvented. Bush slapped Brown on the back, as encouragement when Brown was actually "F' ing up.
That that shows how far out of the loop Bush was/is.
After becoming abreast of the situation, help went everyplace
but where it was needed.Even today people are still suffering.
1yr. later ,where is FEMA?

Did you watch any of the live news feeds?
I would not wager that it would have been handled better with a different administration. However, it did seem that we lacked preparation for this disaster. The weather services knew the possible strength of the storm. Decisions took too long, and it turned out worse than it should have. Some feel that chain-of-command difficulties resulted from placing FEMA under the new department of Homeland Security.

the federal response was slow yes, but the local governments are responsible for the Miss management of the hurricane. the Governor hesitated on calling out the guard. the mayor did not follow what little disaster plan they had. the mistakes on the ground were atrocious. funny how the answer from the person saying because the people were all black so is the mayor. also are you saying all the white people were smart enough to leave

The complaints I hear over and over again are failure to acknowledge the condition of the levies. Mismanagement of the disaster evacuation and rescue causing needless deaths after the disaster, Mismanagement of the disaster funds and the fact that most of New Orleans is still in ruins.

This is not a poitical issue. The Bush administration failed the people of New Orleans. The death of nearly a thousand people is the result of cronism gone mad. A FEMA director that was incapable of doing the job.
