I've heard there was a way. The screen is so bright it hurts my eyes.

Wear sunglasses. You should know this.

Unless you just crawled out from under a rock you should also know there are brightess and contrast controls as well as positioning controls on most monitors. You can stretch the screen picture vertically or horizontally as well. You need to get the rock off your head and figure out how to use the menu control on the front of the monitor.

Good lord, all it takes is some thinking. I'm waiting for someone to come up with something like this:

"I need to pee real bad. How do I do it?"

Has the stupidness level been ratcheted down about 20 notches or is it just me?

Look at your screen. There should be two knobs for up and down with the sign of the sun in the middle. The brightness and dimness are generally on the picture tube base.

You are already complaining of hurting eyes so even if you scale down your brightness you need to get a screen filter, easily available in local market, that diffuses the light and will not allow harmfull radiations to reach your eyes.

there should be buttons or dials on your monitor to do that - otherwise, if you have a good video card nVidia or ATI, you can change the brightness through the software, goto desktoip, right click properties -> Setting -> advanced

this will take you to a tabbed interface, look in there, especially undertabs with your video cards logo on it for a brightness/contrrast/gamma screen

Good Luck!

It depends on your computer. Most desktop computers have it on the monitor. There are + and - buttons that look like a little sun on it, and the plus and minus... well, you can figure that out =).
