Marriage is no longer as important as it used to be, people might say you have a life partner once you're married but how many people do you know stay married for life? Plus if you're commited to somone and they are to you then why do you need to be married to prove it? Some of the happiest couple I know are not married.

Pros :

1. Stag do....although if you're not married you can have a weekend away whenever you want.
2. Honeymoon....but if you're not married you can still go on holiday.
3. Free presents....but if you dont pay out £10k for a wedding you could pay for all the gifts you want.
4. You get the same name as your partner & can have kids....you can do this anyway without marriage.

Cons :

1. If you split up she takes half your money, half your house, half your car.
2. She automatically get full custody of the kids and you only get to see them whe SHE wants if at all.
3. No matter what happens you're always in the wrong (although its the same if you're married or not).
4. The longer the marriage the stronger the headaches get!

i think it is great that you are thinking ahead because making the wrong choice can be a life long ball breaker! for instance say you get married cause the sex is better than great, like out of this world and her body is bangin' in all the ways you like, and all she wants to do is please you all day long. this girl sounds great at first but what if you get married and she turns out to be this total witch, (drop the w and add a b)? now you are stuck with loosing half of all you got. now what if she got pregnant just so she could collect child support from you. what do you do then? stay with her and live the rest of your life in that hot place in the center of the earth or divorce her and live the rest of your life in the center of the earth and broke. apart for the women who say they would get married for "love" the real reason is the love of money and what it will buy. love is great but see how many women will flock to you if you are poor. happiness can't buy you money, love can't either. trust, honesty, loyalty, and devotion are qualities that are good for a mate to have. you should feel comfortable with that person and feel confident that in 50 years that feeling will be the same or better, yeah, and she has to know the same. you got some years to go, have fun playing the field... swing batter, swing.

Marriage originally developed as a way of ensuring that your property passed down to your legitimate children. It was also a good way of improving business relations in communities and especially of improving land holdings, i.e. if you have a parcel of land and a few children, you marry your daughter to your neighbour's son and that way your grandchildren had some land, maybe yours and your neighbours.

Today marriage is a way of ensuring a stable home life for children which is why it's so important to consider carefully before taking the plunge. It does also protect the financial interests of the partners if one of them should die unexpectedly,a lthough you should always make a Will USING A LAWYER please, not one of those will packs or a "professional will writer". My aunt and uncle used one of those firms and it was laughable the things they told them.

But yes, marriage has practical purposes but I would suggest you make up your mind now not to marry too young, and to ensure you take professional advice when the time comes, as to the legal and financial implications of doing so.

The only practical reason is a partnership for mutual gain. If this isnt there dont even think of marriage.
BTW
you are 16 many other things you should be thinking about now other than marriage. Education and creating a future for yourself

That depends on your beliefs. And the way you live your life.
Certain religions don't permit guys and girls to get close with eachother before they are married. They can't even kiss before marriage. Let alone do anything else. lol.
For people like that, marriage is a way to experience love towards members of the opposite sex. Something they haven't done before. So it has a much higher value than for people that don't have religions like this.
For them, marriage is a whole new way life. It's really something special that opens up a new world for them with tonnes of new experiences.

So having beliefs like that can really make marriage worth it.

hi, as to whether there is a practical purpose getting married: Biblical, woman at a point in time have to leave her fathers house and join a man. (marriage). these two people become one and make family.
In other cases, marriages can be termed as a long time life experience.

The reason you get married is to commit to that one person for the rest of your life. Practicality shouldn't come in to it. But being practical if one of you died you would automatically be entitled to take over everything legally.

not in my opinion no.. for me personally its just a signature on a bit of paper and back in the day it was a way of getting society to accept that the 2 people concerned are having sex.

and being an asian i see it as a trap as i truly believe that there is no equaltiy in a marriage even in the 21st century.... but i guess its everyone for their own... just go with the flow have fun and enjoy life to the max n see where it takes you

If something goes wrong in office, you can blame management. If something goes wrong outside office, you blame government. If something goes wrong right inside your home, you need someone to blame. So get married!

On a more serious note, marriage is companionship. You need companions at every stage of life. A spouse is companion for life. He/She fulfills needs for all types of companionship, friend, philosopher guide everything. Believe me, It is better to get married and suffer rather than not marry at all.

Yep loads, companionship, love, shared interests, shelves, white goods, pot pourri to name but a few. At 16 you're too young to contemplate it really - wait until you're older - about 18!
