First you calculate the area of your house in square feet:
13'x8' = 104 sq ft
16'x11' = 143 sq ft
12'x9' = 117 sq ft
8'x9' = 72 sq ft
104 + 143 + 117 + 72 = 436 sq ft
Now, knowing that one yard is three feet, we know that a square yard is nine square feet (3'x3' = 9 sq ft). So all we need to do is divide by nine to get the area in square yards:
436/9 = 48.44 sq yrd
Another way to do it would be to convert all your data into yards first, then calculate. This takes much longer. If you were using metric, you could do this and it would be much faster than doing the way I showed to above. This is why the world should use metric (actually, the world does, just not the States).
Hope this helps.

total sq. ft.=13x8+16x11+12x9+8x9
=104+176+108+72
=460sq.ft
sq yd ⡠1 yd² = 0.836 127 36 m²
sq ft â¡ 1 ft² = 9.290 304Ã10â2 m²
1 sq. ft.=.0929 sq.mtr
460 sq.ft.=460*.0929 sq.mtr=42.734 sq.meter
0.836 127 36 m² = 1 yd²
42.734 sq.meter =42.734 sq.meter/0.836 127 36
51.1094yd²
you have to add extra yard sq. for wall thickness to calculate total
home area in sq. yards.

Oops! Looks like some people aren't very good at multiplication.
13x8=104sq ft. for square yards divide by 9 = 11.56sq yd
16x11=176sq ft. = 19.56sq yd
12x9=108sq ft = 12 sq yd
8x9=72 sq ft = 8 sq yd
= 51.11 sq yd

I'm Irish too. My mom once asked me "Have you been drinking?" I said "I'm Irish". She said "That's no excuse!" I said "Excuse? It's a tradition!"
My uncle got married. A month later he died. The only difference between the funeral and the wedding was one less drunk.
13'x8' = 104 sq ft = 11.56 yds
16'x11' = 143 sq ft = 19.56 yds
12'x9' = 108 sq ft = 12 yds
8'x9' = 72 sq ft = 8 yds

One unknown piece of information.
I don't know if your measurements as listed are in the same direction.
Assuming that they are, the cuts may look like this.
Size.......Buy........Need Fill
13X8......12X8......(1X8)
16X11....12X11.....(4X11)
12X9......12X9
8X9........12X13----Waste 4X13 & 8X4
Total.......12X41=54.67 sq.yds.
The 4X13 used to fill (4X11)
The 8X4 used to fill (1X8 in two pieces)
Waste..4X2 & 6X4=3 1/2 sq. yds.
It would use a little less to fill the 1X8 in 3 or more pieces. May not be acceptable in some cases.
This may not be accurate, as any difference in direction on any or all the measurements may change the total, + or -
Carpet "must" run in the same direction.

First solve for total square feet
13 x 8 = 104 square feet
16 X 11 = 176 squaare feet
12 x 9 = 108 square feet
8 x 9 = 72 square feet
Total square feet are 460

Solving for total square yards
460 total square feet diviced by 9 feet equals 51.11111111square yards
The answer is 51.1 square yards rounded to one decimal place.
