a naive person who believes that humans are not naturally competitive and who thinks we can all live in harmony without some individuals trying to obtain power for themselves.

Russia? Rather proves the point that human nature does not fit into a communist perspective.

A full treatment of your question is impossible here. A "communist" is a person who subscribes to the political ideas fisrt propounded by the German political philosopher Karl Marx. Marx wrote a book called "The Communist Manifesto" circa 1849. Marx claimed that industrialization had lead to the tantamount enslavement of the poor working class (the proletariat). Marx wrote that the capitalist system would never assent to nonviolent change of the oppressive system, so he advocated violent revolution. The Russian Empire became the Soviet Union in 1917 when a successful communist revolution overthrew the T'sarist regime of T'sar Nicholas II. This was the first real success of communist revolution. The Soviets subsequently created the "Comintern", The Communist International, which aimed to export revolution throughout the entire world. The U.S., and many other nations, looked upon this with utter consternation. An American policy of "containment" took shape after the Soviet Union prevailed in Eastern Europe at the end of WW II. I hope this filled in a few gaps in your historical knowledge.

The ideals of communism is everybody is equal in that society and everybody gets an equal share a good idea. A theory put forward by Carl Marx who was an english philospher in the 1800s. Unfortunately this does not work, If there are no leaders all you get is chaos so leaders appear who like the power and use that power to keep everybody equal except for theselves so all the people are poor, downtrodden and the leaders are rich and live in luxury.. As to Russia they wised up and ditched communisn, However with the collapse of Russian power amongst the old eastern block countries more people have died from armed conflict amongst them selves than ever did when Russia was boss

Communism is a form of government, in most 1st world countries we are democratic, the masses vote which way the country goes. Comunists have a dictator, everyone does as the dictator says, capitalism drives our society, the better you do, the more green backs you will have to buy the good life. In Communist countries everyone is given the same whether they are doctors or janitors. There is no incentive to push since you won't advance in society. The only incentive they have is fear. Russia recently switched to democracy and the country has had a lot of trouble adjusting, there are a few billionaires and a whole lot more starving. It will take time and development before Russia can stabilize as a democracy

errr, you just asked for a brief history of the 20th century.

Communism is the idea that everyone should work for the betterment of the country, so everyone works for everyone else. This is opposed to capitalism, where everyone works for the betterment of themselves and their family. In communism, the state decides what is made and how much of everything is made, and the state provides everyone with an equal share of the country's wealth. You don't keep your paycheck, everything you have is given to you by the state.

The idea is that duplication of products (like crest and aquafresh toothpaste) is wasteful, and you'd be more efficient by making only one brand of toothpaste (because then you'd have only one set of executives to be paid etc). It relies on the people in charge to make good decisions as to what direction the country as a whole should move in, and to make accurate forecasts on what people will need.

In practice, however, communism doesn't work. Take the example of two shoemakers. The first shoemaker spends a lot of time and makes great shoes. The second shoemaker spends very little time and makes poor shoes that fall apart quickly. In capitalism, the poor shoemaker has an inferior product, so he can't charge as much and people wouldn't buy it, so he will go out of business. In communism, they get exactly the same compensation, regardless of the quality of their shoes, because the state told them how many shoes to make and then takes those shoes and gives it to the people who need it. The first shoemaker sees this, and he starts making crappy shoes too (since why should he work hard if he's going to get the same thing for slacking off?). Pretty soon, everything in the country is falling apart because nobody is forced to make high quality or innovative products.

Add to this the corruption at the high levels of government; the people who were supposed to be deciding what's best for the country were taking a cut for themselves and basically stealing from everyone else, and doing favors for their families and friends. Eventually, the economy collapsed. I suggest looking up communism on the internet and reading the communist manifesto, then looking at a history of russia for the 20th century, or read wikipedia...

I am!!! What you are referring to is not Russia but the Soviet Union - which was a federation of many (now independent) territories who decided to cecede from the union (much like the Southern states of the U.S. did in the early 1860s) and are now independent countries - like for Instance Ukraine, Beloruss, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania & Estonia.
