He has an Asus A9250 graphics card which I don`t think is up to it. According to the Asus site, the card only supports DirectX 8.1, could anyone shed any light on this? Could the fact that most games require DirectX 9 be the problem?

your right directX9 is used mostly by games...

try to consider buying a new one...
or
try to lower the video resolution and color quality...
that would speed up the game...

What types of problems does he experience? System slowdowns? Screen problems? Crashes? The Asus A9250 is just a version of the ATI Radeon 9250, so it's fine for general use, and lightweight gaming but which games is he trying to play? New 3D/1st-person games like Half-Life 2, Oblivion, Everquest or Call of Duty 2 really need a higher-end card- something along the lines of an ATI X1800 or NVidia 7900 series is recommended if he's considering an upgrade.

As a first step, I'd recommend downloading the latest drivers for that video card- maybe even try the 9250 drivers direct from ATI's site. Bad or outdated video drivers cause problems more often than anything else.

He also might be running into a RAM problem- find out what type of processor his machine has, how much memory etc. Generally he should have at least 512mb (and preferably 1gb) for new releases.

Many games do require Directx9.0 support. But DirectX8.1 is sufficient for many. Check overall RAM , Virtual Memory settings for the PC. Also , check which all programs are running at 1 time . Run virus scan , the problem may be due to something not so obvious . If all else fails , contact the PC vendor or a nearby Hardware shop .
