Your PC may be going into Hibernation mode.

You check to see what you're settings are by right clicking ou your desktop and selecting properties. Next, go to the Screen Saver tab and select the Power box. This will bring up the Power Options Properties window. In this new window, select the Hibernate tab and see if your system is set to go into hibernation - uncheck this tab if you don't want it to go into hibernation.

Some systems do not function well with hibernation on -- it can cause problems like you have descrived.

You can also modify your Power Scheme in the first tab of the Power Options Properties window. Select the power scheme of "Always On" and make sure that both your monitor and system do not turn off or go into standby.

Good Luck.

If you are getting an error message - then advise on that or try these procedures first.

John Z is a crackpot
Akshay is on the right track.
The problem is probably a short of some nature. The power suppy has circuits that shut down when too much current is being consumed or too much heat is being produced. If the power supply does this it is working properly. It is trying to protect the hardware by shutting down instead of burning it up.

If you have recently added components to the system they may be causing excessive current and heat flow. They could be more than your system can handle.

If it's not something you added than most likely it is some defective component.

Your PC will shut down if overheated. Take a small fan and take the door right off and directly let the air circulate inside. This should help you. You don't want it to burn up and it will.

if your using windows xp john z is probably right, during hibernation your hard disk and monitor turns off to save current, but once you press something or start it it goes back to its current settings....

or may be your pc is configure to automatic shutdown, it happens when the certain high of temperature is detected by your computer...

also is try to check your computer switch;;

finally check your house, maybe the ghost are doing it....lol

gudluck!

i think it is a problem wid overheated components if it happens too rapidly suggest u take it to a tech as there might be some short circuit or damaged internal part and can be dangerous

If nothing else works, check your motherboard for capacitors that have stuff (electrolyte) bulging out of them. That could cause random shutdowns.

Other than that, it could be your fans or power supply, maybe even another component of the midplane (err, motherboard).

ouch. this is symptomatic of a dying motherboard. another symptom is that you have to turn the switch off and on a few times before it actually turns on. another symptom is that the times it takes to turn off and on will get shorter and shorter and shorter until it doesn't turn on at all. for me, this happened because the plug i was using wasn't grounded.
