what does the phrase "...and counting mean?"?

I came across the phrase in a news item.

"...and counting" means that the numbers are increasing as we speak.

It means that the number is still going up, not all of them have been discovered, or "accounted for".

I would believe that it means say, three and more are expected to come if that is the context that you mean.
