Prussia was, most recently, an historic state originating in East Prussia, an area which for centuries had substantial influence on German and European history. The last capital of Prussia was Berlin.

East Prussia was a province of the Kingdom of Prussia and the Free State of Prussia from 1773-1824 and 1878 to 1945. Between 1824 and 1878 it was joined with West Prussia in the Province of Prussia. It had been created out of the territories of Ducal Prussia and Warmia.

East Prussia was located along the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea, where it enclosed the bulk of the ancestral lands of the now-extinct Old Prussians. Following Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II, the territory was partitioned in 1945 into Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, and the constituent counties of Lithuania's Klaipėda Region. The East Prussian capital of Königsberg was renamed Kaliningrad in 1946.

The entry in Wikipedia is even more detailed: "East Prussia was located along the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea, where it enclosed the bulk of the ancestral lands of the now-extinct Old Prussians. Following Nazi Germany's defeat in World War II, the territory was partitioned in 1945 into Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, Poland's Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, and the constituent counties of Lithuania's Klaipėda Region. East Prussia was a part of Germany until the end of WWII (1945)when it became part of the Soviet Union, specifically a part of Russia.

Prior to WWII East Prussia had been part of Prussia or Germany since 1667. Before that date the region was under Polish suzerainty, but the people were still ethnically German (or Prussian & not Polish).

East Prussia was the eastern part of Germany. It became well known in 1919 after the ratification of the Treaty of Versailles after World War I when it became an exclave of Germany, cut off from the rest of the country by Poland's Danzing strip (which gave Poland access to the Baltic Sea. It was Chancellor Hitler's desire in 1939 to re-connect East Prussia to the rest of Germany that caused Germany to demand the Danzing strip be ceded to Germany. When Poland refused, Germany invaded on 1 September, starting World War II.

After the war, East Prussia was divided into two parts. The southern half was given to Poland, while the northern half became part of the Soviet Union, assigned to the Russian part. The city of Königsberg was renamed Kaliningrad. After Lithuania became independent of the Soviet Union in 1991, this part of Russia became an exclave itself!
