Goldfish can remain outdoors so long as the pond does not freeze too deep. A 6-8 inch thick ice cover over a 3-4 foot pond is acceptable so long as a substantial area of surface water is open at all times to allow for gas exchange. A bubbler will help circulate the water and may prevent freezing in cool climates, but for colder regions a de-icer will be needed to maintain an open area.

My grandmother has had goldfish for years!!! First she had an old bath tub sunk into the ground so only the rounded top edge showed. The tub was white porcelin. She had it filled about 80% with water and she also had water lilies in there. I think she took the flowers out, but the fished stayed. She covered the tub with plexi glass. I remember snow sitting on top of the glass on a couple of occasions. In the spring she would uncover the tub and added some more water and the fish would still be there. I was shocked. She now has a plastic find pond, kidney shaped. She bought that at Home Depot or Lowes. She has that in the ground with just the top rim showing. She has plenty of fish in there and she does the same thing every winter. Covers it up with the plexi glass. Now her fish were 27 cents a piece at the pet store. Results may vary, my Grandma lives in New Jersey, it does get cold. Freezing and snowing. So hold on, don't give me 10 points yet. Before you go leaving your imported Koi in the backyard for the winter, check out a few more sites and talk to some more people. I don't want to see anyone lose a pet... Good Luck...

As long as the water doesn't freeze solid in your area you can leave them in year round. I know in our area they suggest the water be 3-4 feet deep but if your area is colder it may need to be deeper. I think our zone is 7. That will make it easier for you to compare. My fish have been in my pond for going on 6 years. And I only take them out when one dies or I have to get in and scrub the linning. Good luck to you,

If the pond is deep enough you can leave them in there all year even if it freezes, I believe it would need to be at least 3 feet deep.

they can live outside year round but you have to make sure that your pond doesn't freeze solid, if there is a danger of it freezing you can buy a pond heater that will prevent it or you can bring them inside till spring
