The immediate motive for the assassination is usually ascribed to Gandhi's January 13, 1948 decision to fast to the death, a term of which was that the Indian central government reverse a decision to withhold the transfer of 55 crore (550 million) rupees to the government of Pakistan. The transfer had been specified in the partition agreement, but the Indian government had refused to complete it, complaining of the Pakistani military occupation of part of the Indian state of Kashmir.
The Indian government immediately reversed its decision to withhold the funds, which infuriated Godse and his friends.

Also, Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, which initially supported Gandhi's civil disobedience movement, but then rejected Gandhi because they felt that he was sacrificing Hindu interests in an effort to appease minority groups. They blamed Gandhi for the bloody partition of India, in which hundreds of thousands of people died.

The British decided to quit India, after the II World War. The Muslim League queered their pitch for a separate nation for the Muslim; communal riots raged in many places. Mahatma Gandhi, although a devout Hindu, wanted that in the free India, both Hindus and Muslims should live together and advocated that India should not be partitioned. He wanted the Hindus to show magnanimity towards the minority Muslims. He even suggested to other congress leaders to let the power be handed over to the Muslim League, rather than agreeing to two nation theory. The Hindu Mahasabha could not stomach Gandhi's 'appeasement' to Muslims. They started treating him as the enemy of the Hindu cause and desired his elimination. Godse was the instrument to execute this desire.
